Evaluation Question Five - How did you attract/address your audience?

So how did we attract and address our audience?
After much discussion
during the production of the film, we wanted to aim at making the opening as
‘memorable’ as possible for our target audience of 15 years of age to 25 years
of age. Doing this, we made sure we had short takes on each clip that you see in
the opening to not ‘drag out’ the opening for too long. Also, the music one of
the members of the group had created helps make this opening memorable, due to
the upbeat and fresh soundtrack in the background.
When the final cut of the
film was finished, we showed this opening to two students in our age target,
and received feedback from them. The videos is below.
In order for the audience
to connect with the characters, the story had to be as realistic as possible,
so the arguing part on the bridge does reflect this and the realistic story
could also affect the women’s alter-egos. If we had done an unrealistic story
and an unrealistic setting, we felt the audience would not connect with the
characters.
Also through the location,
we wanted the audience to connect with the films setting too as it was vital,
due to us aiming for young British audiences this would hopefully help the
audience when watching the film.

Elements Film Opening: Production Day Two
On Monday 27th February 2012 we continued filming only this time with Jess who plays the characters 'Scarlett' in the opening. There were different weather changes as it was late afternoon and the sun was out, but the last shoot it was darker. This did not effect the filming though as we waited for the clouds to pass the sun in order to get the correct lighting.
I started to film at the beach in which are character (Scarlett played by Jess) is sitting before receiving a text and walking off. Pete wanted to make the shots perfect and improve on last times shoot with the other two protagonists. I was picking up much of the wind through the cameras microphone as we were near the sea but I only shot when it had calmed down. I and the others wanted to keep mainly on 'eye line' with this character so the audience could connect with her in a way, much like the other protagonists in the film.
I was very worried about filming on the bridge, me and the others had to be very careful of not revealing where we shot Zoe and Effie's scenes as they were not there this day. As it was getting later and the sun was drawing to a close I had to quickly film these scenes in order of the continuity to be right from the last shoot. Again we wanted to keep eye level with Jess as much as possible so we did so. The day overall was a success and we had a discussion (Pete and Ash) after the shoot, organising what we could do about the sound during the editing and came to the conclusion that with out getting rid of it, just change the audio volume and gain in order of not to much distortion during the scene.

'Elements' Opening: Filming Schedule
I disscussed that it would take only one day to film everything starting at an early time (9am-10am) during the week after half-term (25th/26th). I do not mind what the weather will be as long as it is constant due to continuity, if there weather changes during the day of filming we would may need to do quick re-shoots.
'Elements' Opening: Costume
I would like to mainly represent the three main protagonists status in the world of today, so each of them would wear different types of clothing to show this. The character of Flo is a very normal person and has the life of a normal citizen, so we will be keeping her costume basic and relate to others. But for Autumn and Scarlett, I will choose certain parts for each of their costumes.
Autumn is a rich and successful person, so the actress will be wearing a pencil skirt, a descent blazer and a blouse.

For the character of Scarlett who is unemployed and living low, she will be wearing clothes that are creased, too small on her and maybe a trench coat (long and green) that she wears constantly which would be raggedy to show the age of the clothes and her status in life.

"Elements" Opening: Locations
Location
We will be filming mainly in Bournemouth for the short film opening; for each section of the girls scenes they will be allicated in different areas of the town until the meet up outside a cafe.

Effie's scene takes place inside the arcade in Bournemouth and stops outside

We will be using this café's exterior for the end of the opening and the continuing dialogue of the film opening. This cafe gives a sought of modern world for the film as it is a very fresh and different looking cafe than others.

"Elements" Opening: The Protagonists
We are soon to go into Production of our movie opening and have finally found
the actresses who will be playing the main protagonists in our project. The three
girls we have picked take Drama A-Level in our school and we have seen them
act, they seemed to be the perfect choice for the job.
Zoe Chapple as Flo

The character of Flo is the most mature out of the three characters and we needed
an actress who looked like a strong character and able to be a surrogate sought of
mother to the other two. We thought Zoe was the perfect choice due to her look
and off course her acting is very good. I like to relate Zoe's look to '
Invisibility Woman' in the "Fantastic 4" movies who is also a strong character
to the superhero group.
Effie Robinson as Autumn

Effie has a very powerful look to her in which we thought would fit perfectly with
the character of 'Autumn' as the character is a successful woman who earns a lot of money.
Effie was the perfect choice for Autumn due to her acting and also, we want the audience
to be able to understand the characters status (which is high). The character is written and
hopefully performed very stereotypical on rich people, for example the voice needs to be
posh and how she would hold bags of shopping or hold her mobile phone.

Jessica Young as Scarlett
The character of Scarlett is a unemployed young woman who is a bit of a rebel and still acts
like a teenager most of the time. Jessica was our main person to play Scarlett as she is a
strong actress and had the look to her we wanted. The character also is not a very
fashionable person so we wanted to make sure that even though this character was
unemployed and hardly has a living, she still had an interesting look to her.

'Comic Book Movie Opening - Production Ideas
Location
We will be filming at two locations. One will be Bournemouth as it would be great to do some establishing shots for the opening. And the second Ringwood because there will be a Cafe we could film outside of and may be less busy in Ringwood.
Actors/Characters
Scarlett (Power is Fire) will be played by Jessica Young, Flo (Power is Water) will be played by Zoe Chapple and Autumn (Power is Earth) will be played by Effie Robinson.
Costumes
It has not been decided which characters would be wearing what type of clothing, but we had a few ideas to show their lifestyle (e.g Class) - Unemployed ----> Casual Wear - Normal ----> Normal wear but fashionable - Successful ----> Smart wear (Business clothing for women)
Props
We only quickly wrote down Props we would most likely need on set when filming so the Actors could interact with or use. - Mobile Phones
- Glasses (One Character)
- Handbags/ Shopping Bags
- Coffee Cups (Take Out)
'Comic-Book Movie' Opening - Planning: Initial Idea
We have gone into the Planning stage of our opening now and came up with already a great idea. The group had decided that our opening would show three women waling to a cafe at separate times and using their (super)powers while doing something relevant.
The main idea for our opening:
"Three Women start their daily lives as normal (making breakfast, watching TV, etc.) and we see each of them use their powers on normal day-to-day stuff. Then they all walk to a cafe and meet up after a long time".
Our Idea in 140 characters:
"Three Women start their daily lives using their powers. We follow them on their walk to meet each other after many years of being apart."

'Comic-Book Movies' - Why do people watch them?
I think what certain Comic-Book Movies do to attract an audience is all down to the narrative of the movie from the trailer seen or clips and so on. Also, most of these movie are obviously based on Comic-Book characters and what the movie industry does is bring them to life which really makes fans of certain superheros and comics happy and wanting to go and watch it.
Because this is an opening what we are really trying to achieve is a good opening that will really want the audience to keep wanting more and be pulled into the narrative/action/etc. An Example could be the opening of 'The Dark Knight' (2008) which really was a brilliant opening and got the audience loving this film and an audience staying to continue to watch this movie because they are so interested in the narrative introduced to them in the opening
A main aspect of a 'Comic-Book Movie' is the protagonist of the film. It entirely depends on what superpower do they have? Their background. Setting. All of that really boosts fans of these type of movies to see them.

Research into Comic-Book Movies: Characters & Costume
When coming to represent the character (protagonist) of the
film opening, you need the audience needs to understand this characters status
compared to their Super-Hero identity. For Example: the character of Bruce
Wayne (Left) is known to be rich and
also, the clothes he wears are very 1st class and neat, showing his reputation
and so on. The character of Peter Parker (Right) also represents his character
through the clothes he wears, big coat and huge spectacles really do show the
characters personality. Another way of showing the characters personality is through the acting, so to enable this we would need to find a good actor(s). All of us should consider these points and the fact they wear more 'descreet' clothes when not fighting crime.
